Rutgers University. Transit Hub + Plaza
New Brunswick, NJ. 2007
WRT with TEN ARQUITECTOS
ROLE: Project Manager + Landscape Designer

The first phase of the College Avenue Campus Master Plan will begin this summer. This plaza celebrates transportation infrastructure as a means of creating a lively pedestrian hub. Extending along College Avenue, the newly  “greened” streetscape and promenade transitions into a plaza. It is a pedestrian only and transit oriented environment, closed to car traffic for three blocks. A bus shelter designed by TEN Arquitectos picks up students and faculty on one end of the plaza leaving the rest open to flexible use. Lawns, custom red seating, outdoor cafes, and giant steps all lend themselves to seeing and being seen, exchanging information, and bolstering academic life in the public realm. In addition a symbolic  “Red Carpet” crosses the plaza, which is the beginning of a pedestrian mall that will eventually lead to the banks of the Raritan River.
